A short wine list
Around thirty bottles, mostly from small growers. All of them are open by the glass on request.
A small room
Thirty-four seats. Friday and Saturday go a week ahead — midweek you can usually get in.
Six seats at the bar
Held back for walk-ins every service. First come, and you eat looking at the fire.
One fire, no gas
The menu is short because the fire decides what it can cook.
Everything goes over wood, which means the kitchen can hold four or five main dishes at once and no more. It also means the list is rewritten whenever the delivery changes, which is most days.

Booked on a Thursday not knowing what we would get. Turned out to be lamb that had been on the fire since lunchtime. We have been back twice since and it has been different both times.
Sat at the bar with no booking at half six on a Friday. Watched the whole thing being cooked a metre away. Best £40 I have spent on Gloucester Road.
I tried to look at the menu before going and could not open it on my phone, which nearly put us off. Glad it did not — but they should sort that.

Six of them are held back every service for walk-ins.
Friday and Saturday go about a week ahead, which is not much use to someone deciding at six o’clock. So the bar seats are never bookable — first come, and you eat looking straight at the fire.

Can I see the menu before I come?
It is on this page, and it changed this afternoon. There is no PDF to download and nothing to open in another app.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Friday and Saturday go about a week out. Tuesday to Thursday you can usually get a table the same day, and there are always six bar seats held back for walk-ins.
Is there anything for vegetarians?
Every dish on tonight’s menu except the sirloin has a vegetarian version, and they are cooked over the same fire rather than assembled as an afterthought.
What if I have an allergy?
Tell us when you book and again when you sit down. Because the menu changes daily the kitchen will talk you through it in person rather than handing you a laminated card.
Can you do a large group?
Up to six online. Larger than that, call — the room is thirty-four seats so it depends on the night.
